Experience and Review

We visited Gyusei Gyukatsu Wagyu-Steakhouse around 12 PM on a weekday, and the place was already buzzing by 12:30 PM.

The first impression? Beautiful plating. Each set came with over 12 dipping sauces, thoughtfully arranged to let diners explore the beef’s natural flavor in different ways. The sauces included Yuzu Kosho, Kimchi, Ponzu Radish, Katsu Sauce, Fresh Lemon, Shichimi, Maldon Sea Salt, Sansho Pepper, Mustard Seed, Fresh Wasabi, Housemade Potato Salad, and an Umami Onsen Egg.

Every dip elevated the flavor differently, from citrusy to spicy to umami-rich. My personal favorite? The simplest — salt and pepper. It brings out the beef’s natural sweetness and umami beautifully.

The Mains: Ribeye vs Sirloin

Gyukatsu grilled on a personal mini wok.

We ordered the A5 Sirloin Set ($59+) and A5 Ribeye Set ($69+), both featuring premium Nishi Awa Wagyu beef. You’ll be given a small personal grill (mini wok) to sear the beef slices to your preferred doneness — from rare to well done.

We tried ours fully cooked, and surprisingly, the beef remained tender, juicy, and full of flavor, nearly as good as a medium-rare cut. The only slight disappointment was the crust, which broke off more easily than expected — though it didn’t affect the flavor much.

Every main set also includes free-flow freshly shredded cabbage and miso soup, both of which were refreshing palate cleansers between bites.

Waiting Time: Around 10–15 minutes after ordering as the chefs prepare everything fresh.

The Sides: Oysters & Mentaiko Fries

We also tried their Fresh Oysters, which arrived after some time — but for good reason. The chef behind the counter was meticulously plating each one with a generous scoop of caviar on top. The oysters were incredibly fresh and had that perfect briny sweetness.

Note: We moved one of the caviers to the other 2 oysters haha

The Mentaiko Fries with Caviar were another hit — crispy, creamy, and indulgent, perfect for sharing.

Final Thoughts (Rating: 4.0/5)

Overall, Gyusei Gyukatsu Wagyu-Steakhouse is a great halal-friendly Japanese steakhouse in Bugis that brings something fresh to the local dining scene. The presentation was gorgeous, flavors diverse, and the beef quality impressive.
